I haven't been watching American Idol because I'm in the UK, but it's the same here (incl. our Simon!)

Yes it is heavily produced and 'controlled' but I love watching it too. There is a large element of hope ... over here, the past winners have been those tear jerk underdogs, winning against all odds. Talent shining through. A miserable upbringing is a distinct advantage!

The 'growth'of these artists is quite incredible. Occasionally they do lose the 'essence' of them, but generally we see them transform in front of our eyes. Starting with a raw presentation, they become fully made over, choreographed with a full 24 piece orchestra (or whatever).

    >> And there’s value in this show for the rest of us as well.

Absolutely. In some ways it could be argued that it makes being a 'hit' easy with a team behind you. But if that IS true, I believe it's OK. The big guns have had it their way fro too long. I know Simon and Co make millions from this ... but it does open doors by changing the mindset of the public.

Just look what's happened on the internet ... now people don't care what the majors say, it's back to good old Word Of Mouth with Social Networking. It IS an uneven playing field and it's in OUT favor!

Musicians are giving away tracks now and earning money from live gigs and T-Shirt sales. And the record labels are begging for a slice of it!

American Idol or Britain's Got Talent .... (see them on You Tube ..... it's all great!
